5 pros are:1) plentiful2) relatively cheap on theshort run3) Simple and easy to use4) not sure ifthis pertains to a definite pro, but whenseparating fuel (gas, natural gas, and gasoline)from the tar used in plastics, the fuel is abyproduct with nowhere else to go but to beburned; so it's a use or be wasted resource5) easyto gather/ profitable (stimulates economy)

There are lots of benefits of using fossilfuels. Why do you think that fossil fuels providemost of our energy today? Because, on balance, right now, they are the best we have.1. Theyreally saved the day when they replaced theprevious main fuel-- wood. Even with the lowerpopulations and lower energy use of yesteryear, many places in the world were factingdeforestation. Fossil fuels saved the forests ofthe world.2. Fossil fuels are usually thecheapest form of energy, especially if you need"portable" energy for applications like cars.3. Fossil fuels are easy to use. Unlike nuclearenergy which is a comples technology. Fossilfuels can be burned very easily. Fire is a veryold technology. Fossil fuels come in solids likecoal, liquids like petroleum, and gas likemethane. This makes them very flexible anduseful.4. Fossil fuels exist on every continentand are readily available all over the world. Where the balance isn't right, petroleum and coalare easy to transport.5. Liquid and solid fossilfuels are generally safer to handle and transportthan many of the alternatives such as hydrogen andnuclear fuels.Remember, the reason that mostenergy used right now is from fossil fuels isbecause right now, with current technology andsituation, they are the best economic choice. When we use the cheapest energy available to makethings and transport things then everthing costsless.

I guess you have never lived with wood heating. Itis messy, dangerous and requires a lot ofchopping, stacking and sawing. It is also an verylimited resource. A lot of places have lost theirtrees to people needing wood for cookingfires.Next point. Oil can be used for running theinternal combustion engine and the engines of jetplanes. No other fuel has the same value ofhandling or power yet. Bio-diesel might be areplacement but that opens the question if weshould be diverting food into fuel use.Third. Itis not just about burning oil and other fossilfuel for energy. The byproducts of oil processingare chemicals, plastics and fertilizers. Even ifwe had an instant replacement for fuel oils wewould still need oils for the plastics, petrochemical and farm fertilizer production.Justlook around and see that your clothes are oil, your furniture is oil some of your drugs areoil.Oil is more than just being able to drive carsaround.Without oil we could not feed ourselves, clothe ourselves or cure ourselves. We would haveno paved roads or rubber, no asphalt shingles onthe roof over your head... you get the idea.Wecould not grow enough natural fibres or organicfood to replace what we get by using oilbyproducts.I doubt if we can even grow enoughplants to replace oil as a fuel, especially if wehave to eat at the same time. A farmer might beable to grow enough oil to run a tractor, but canhe grow enough oil to run a city, or a country.
