Question : What makes the diamond the hardest mineral?
What makes the diamond the hardest mineral?I have heard that something other is harder than a diamond, but I am not sure. So I don't really care about the other things, because I don't know them. So what makes the diamond, not other minerals, the hardest mineral?

All Answers: Answer #1Diamond is carbon which has been formed as crystals under extreme compression and heat in avolcano. It's hardness comes from the structurethe atoms form under these conditions. - answered by BundyGil
Answer #2 It's hardest because of it's chemical make-up. It's made of carbon and carbon atoms fit very wellto each other. There is no space between so theobject becomes very stable. Also, for diamonds, millions of years under the ground being squeezedby all the weight of the rock around it changes itfrom just being coal or some other form of carbonto diamond. - answered by Henry
Answer #3 Each atom in a diamond melecule is joined to 4 or5 other atoms. This makes it compressed and hard. - answered by muZik_Lova
Answer #4 it is covalently bonded and it has acrystallattice and the other hardest is graphite. - answered by never give up
Answer #5 diamond is made of cardon atoms...these atoms areheld by strong covalent bonds....each cardon atomis attached to 4 other cardon atoms..... - answered by heidiz
Answer #6 the 2 to 3 dimensional lattices of carbon makes itthe hardest material,it's all due to carbonatom.the have three basic properties:1.they formcovalent bonds with large no of otherelements2.they can extend themselves to form suchcovalent bond with 4 different types of atoms3.theform covalent bonds by sharing electrons indifferent ways, this bonds r very hardso carbon isbehind all this when they form short chains theyresult into gas and when long chains they formsolid,i don't know more than this as I'm a studentstudying in 10Th standard of Gujarat state inIndia - answered by xlene1259
Answer #7 Diamond has coherent binding by cubic structure ofcarbon atoms. - answered by Tuncay U
Answer #8 it's crystaline structure. every mineral has aunique crystaline structure. This determines thetype of mineral it is and how hard it is. - answered by Sarah F
