Question : Is rail travel in Europe a viable alternative to flying?
I am considering a holiday in Spain (travelling from UK). These days, flying is a lot of hassle, what with the increase in security, and baggage restrictions. Would anyone recommend rail travel over air travel? Is travelling 1st class worth the extra money?

Answer #5 Rail travel is preferable to air travel in Europe,in my opinion. It's easier, and you actually getto see the country you're traveling through, asopposed to just flying over it. It takes longerthan a flight, but if you factor in all thewaiting time at the airport, you pretty much breakeven. Europe's rail system is fantastic. 1stclass not really necessary...spend the extra moneyat a fabulous restaurant or an extra day oftouring or something worthwhile. - answered by Melissa M
Answer #6 Rail travel is always pleasanter than flying - butclearly it will take longer and unfortunatelycost more (unless you are in the habit of flyingbusiness class!). With Eurostar and French 'TGVs'from Paris you can travel remarkably quickly. Youcould get to Spain in a day, assuming an earlystart from London. These trains travel at over 180MPH. 1st class will cost about half as much again- worth it if you are not counting the pennies. - answered by david f
