What people talked about Bowflex:
Question: #1: Bowflex???
I have an elliptical trainer/stepper and amthinking about getting something different. Iusually use free weights - would you recommend aBowflex though? - asked by Sunflower

It depends on what your looking for. Free weightsare obviously the best but I have seen bow flexwork for some people. The problem with bow flex isthat it is resistance training which doesn't workyour muscles as well as weights do. It is muchharder to get "cut" on a bow flex. For the mostpart I suggest using free weights as much aspossible. - answered by: Stuey

Question: #3: Has anyone bought a Bowflex and does it reallywork?
I'm sure you've all seen the ads on TV. If youwork out with the Bowflex just 20 minutes a day, 3times a week, that in no time you start gettingresults. I'd like to develop my abs and upperbody but I'm skeptical about the Bowflex. Wouldn't diet be almost as important? Has anyonebought one of these machines and what kind ofresults have you experienced? - asked by BikerBob

I have a bowflex and it definitely works. Youwill notice results but I think the bowflex islike a supplement in a way. Use it with freeweights and you will notice very good results. I'll tell you what the first time I used thatbowflex I was hurtin :) If you are just lookingto tone out our abs or toning bowflex alone isperfect, if you want to gain a lot of size, thereis nothing better than free weights. 3 workouts aweek (but I'd try to at least go for an hour) ofheavy lifting will make any person gain asignificant amount of size if your diet is full ofprotein in a relatively short period of time. - answered by: burgler09

Question: #5: How can a woman JUST tone with the bowflex?
I am a woman, 5'3'' about 110 pounds and want totone my body. I DO NOT want to get bulky or reallymuscular, just enough to look long and lean. Ibought a machine similar to the bowflex and waswondering if anyone knows excersizes I can do withit for my body type. I really am interested inworking out the stomach, butt, and thighs. - asked by blondewithaphd

Lots of repetitions at a low resistance level. Pick a level at which you can flex around 16-20times, and work your way up to doing it 20-28times before bumping your repetitions. - answered by: Mythological Beast

Question: #6: Would Working out on a Bowflex make me bigger andheavier instead of skinnier?
I weigh 230 pounds, I'm not all fat, I got somemuscle. Me and my father were talking aboutgetting a Bowflex. My question is would workingout on all Bowflex make me skinnier? One of myfriends told that if someone that weighed 250pounds and was mostly fat, began lifting weightswould burn the fat and turn it into muscle, butyou would still weigh about the same but with lessfat. So if worked out on a Bowflex for six weeksand lets suppose, lose 25lbs, would I lookskinnier or the same bigness but just more muscle? - asked by Francisco Q

You would slim down but you would also get musclebulk. But it would look good. It just depends. Ifyou want best results try losing weight before youdo bowflex. - answered by: Lulu

Question: #7: Is a bowflex a good home gym for working out?
im thinking about getting a bowflex, anyone havecomments on it? - asked by dethklok1189

I am in the military and also in college, longstory but just take my word for it ;)I have beento several apartment complex's workout rooms tosee anything made by Bowflex to be broken. Then onthe ships and stations I serve at on my time off,I have seen the same thing. In short, I havenoticed that anything Bowflex is extremelyoverpriced and not durable. When working out, youshould not have to baby equipment. But it seemslike this is the case with the Bowflex. Now Iunderstand things break, and sometimes peopledon't take care of stuff. But the militarypersonell here should do that, unlike collegestudents. If I were you, I would get somethingother than a bowflex if you can spare the room. One maker of workout machines that I have seenwear and tear go into, and still last, are Cybexmachines. The military uses them in all of theirbootcamps/recruit training facilities. So imaginethem being used constantly for 8+ hours a dayEVERY DAY and they never break. The bowflexequipment I have seen broken is the bar-machinethat you see on tv all the time (bends the barsfor weight), then dumbells with the knobs you turnfor weights, and the bench press machine that doesother workouts. All 3 of these I have seen brokenmore than once...ESPEIALLY the dumbbells. Now whoknows, maybe by yourself, and brand new, they willbe good for you and never break. All I know isthat in a social/public area, they are alwaysbroken. I have never seen a fully functioningBowflex machine in my life....no joke...other thanin a fitness store.Hope this helps, and I wouldseriously consider getting a Cybex combined with acouple other things. Getting a dumbbell rack,bike/eliptical machine, and a Cybex-all-in-onewould probably be better than a bowflex...and thesame price. - answered by: Crizzle Gizzle

Question: #9: Is the resistance on the Bowflex power rods thesame as the weight from free weights?
I've heard rumors that the amount of weight thatyou can do on a Bowflex with Power rod technologydoes not equal the amount of that you can do withfree wights. This is hard to describe andprobably harder to understand, so here is anexample:If I can bench 210 on a Bowflex, can Ibench 210 on a regular free weight bench?I don'thave access to any free weights so I can't testfor myself... so help please? - asked by John C

My understanding is that the power rods increaseresistance as they bend more. Not initially thefull weight. But as you change arm position usingweights, the leverage changes affecting theresistance some, too.Just keep incrementing therod resistance 5-10%. You are getting stronger. Try doing pushups with various hand and armpositions. The more you can do in all positions, the stronger you are. - answered by: Laurence W
